MA LEEF Forum - July 2012
The Sustainable Endowments Institute, in partnership with Healthcare Without Harm, hosted a forum at Harvard University on July 10, 2012, launching a new New England-based initiative, Leaders in Energy Efficiency Financing (LEEF).
Designed to build on the Financing the Future of Energy Efficiency Summit in May, the LEEF Forum outlined LEEF’s mission to establish a network of higher education and healthcare institutions as a national model for sustainable energy efficiency financing. LEEF encourages the creation of self-managed green revolving funds (GRFs) to assist institutional investment in urgently needed energy efficiency building upgrades.
This one-day convening set the stage for the two-year project by bringing together higher education and healthcare administrators, as well as major Massachusetts players in the energy financing arena. Participants shared their own sustainability progress and learned from peers and specialists in the field. Thanks to the generous support of the Barr Foundation, there was no registration fee.

Donation to HEET
In lieu of purchasing carbon offsets for participant’s travel to the Financing the Future of Energy Efficiency Summit, SEI made a donation to the organization Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET). HEET, based in Cambridge, MA, provides assistance for local nonprofits in the Cambridge community through reduced weatherization services for their buildings and empowers local citizens by training them in energy-efficiency strategies and mitigating the local energy use.
With a donation of $500 to HEET, SEI’s gift will offset approximately 5.8 metric tons of CO2, the equivalent of more than 6 people flying round trip from San Francisco to Boston. This donation will provide HEET with the ability to assist more nonprofit organizations in the weatherization of their buildings, estimated to provide more than $2,000 worth of cost savings over the lifetime of the building due to reduced electricity, heat, and water use.
